              History Of Gwalior and Gwalior Fort 

                                     a)  Gwalior Fort

The Magnificent city of Gwalior, which is rich in its Heritage and culture is adorned with some of the heritage pearls like Gaos ka Makbara, Ji Vilas Palace, Gujari Mahal, Chaturbhuj Mandir and one of them is the Grand Gwalior Fort standing 104 m Tall and spread into the area of 2.4 km. The Gwalior fort is divided into two main  parts first one is the main part of fort which is also known as Man Mandir, the second one is the Gujari Mahal which is build for Gujari Queen of King Man Singh Tomar of Tomar Dynasty during (1486-1516). Basically, if you take a tour of Gwalior fort you will observe different locations on the fort as starting from man mandir crossing the Karn Mahal, Jahangir Mahal and the Tomb of  Rana King of Gohad Bhim singh Rana, not only this you will also find the world's second inscription of zero in the Chaturbhuj  Temple which is located in the fort premises. This is all about some thick information about the fort also including some magnificent archit Temples like SAS BAHU KA MANDIR and TELI KA MANDIR.

      With this let us have a look at the history of Gwalior fort and How it came into existence and how does Gwalior got its name: Story starts with the King Raja Suraj Sen or Sur Sen, when he came into this area of land for hunting and some stories also tell us that king Suraj Sen is suffering from an incurable disease but from both the cases we came to the conclusion that at both means, he came and meet an stunning sage named Gwalipa as per the first story the King got lost while hunting and adrift in this area for about three-four days without having a single drop of water, then he found the sage Gwalip's shed (kutia) and ask for water then sage without knowing his identity offered king water. which is the sages a common attribute and as per second story sage offered the King medicine for his incurable diseases as a result King got affected and impressed by the hospitality and kindness of sage and promised to build a fort and establish a town on his name 'Gwalipa' now pronounced "Gwalior". The Gwalior fort is situated on the Gopachal Rock. This is the story behind the name and the establishment of Gwalior fort and Gwalior.

      And now we will talk about the different rulers who have ruled the Gwalior fort :

Starting with the 83 generations of King Suraj Sen who have ruled Gwalior. After that the fort came into the control of Hunas and after them it was ruled by Gaurjara and Pratiharas and after them the fort was besized by Muslim invaders which takes place from the first Gulam clan of Delhi Qutubuddin Aibak. After, it was again captured in 1232 by Iltumish and from the 13th century it came under the rule of Tomar Clan of Rajputs. Virsingh Tomar was the first Tomar ruler who have ruled Gwalior and the most famous and prominent one was Man Singh Tomar who build the Man Mandir and Gujari Mahal for his Gurjari Rani Mrignayani in the Fort premises and Ramshah Tomar was the last Tomar ruler Of Gwalior as He participated in the Battle of Haldighati with the side of  Maharana Pratap He with his three sons and 300 soldiers got Martyred in the Battle. Shalivahan Singh Tomar, Bahan Singh Tomar and Pratap Singh Tomar was his thee sons who got martyred in the battle and with this the Tomar dynasty ended in Gwalior and the Gwalior Fort then came into the control of Mughals and Mughal converted the fort into the Royal prison for enemy's of Mughal's  in 1558. As a result the Akbar first cousin Abul Kasim was executed at the fort, Jahangir jailed the sixth Guru of  Sikhs Guru Hargobind Singh at the age of 14 in 1609 and at 1617's Diwali Jahangir Released him. In 1661 Murad Bakhsh the youngest son of ShahJahan and brother of Aurangzeb was executed in the prision of Gwalior. After the Death of Aurenzeb in 1707 the Rana king of Gohad has taken control of the Gwalior fort and in 1755-56  Maratha has taken control of the fort by defeating the Gohad King Chattar Singh. After defeated by the Maratha General Mahadji Scindia, the Jaats of Gohad flew to their territory and thus a treaty has been signed between them. till then the fort of Gwalior is been in the control of Marathas in between that there are certain times when the Marathas has been overthrown by the Britishers in 1780 and soon restored by Marathas within four Years. At the time of Daulat Rao Scindia the fort was lost to  Britishers, Due to Second Anglo Maratha War, Many times there were Certain changes in the control of Gwalior Fort but at Last in 1886, The Britishers handed over the fort to Scindias because they have control nearly of whole India. Till then the Gwalior fort is under the control of Scindias and under them there are several Monuments got Restored, So, It is the small story of Gwalior Fort. However there are many more secrets uphold by the Fort.
